On Saturday May 7, 2011 The Heart Foundation of Jamaica (HFJ) in association with the InterAmerican Heart Foundation (IAHF) and the American Heart Association (AHA) staged the 7th Caribbean Conference on Emergency Cardiac Care (ECC) at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel in Kingston Jamaica.

The Keynote address entitled “The 2010 AHA Guidelines for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and ECC” was presented by Dr. Michael Sayre, Chairman of the American Heart Association’s ECC Committee and Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine at the Ohio State University. Other speakers originated from Jamaica, Grand Cayman, Barbados, Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago as well as the United States of America.

There were approximately 122 participants from across the Caribbean region at the conference. According to Mrs. Deborah Chen, Executive Director of The Heart Foundation of Jamaica, ”the conference was a success and met its objectives. It is always important to have such conferences so that there may be updates and exchange of ideas. Participants were updated on the new guidelines for CPR and ECC as well as benefitted from the diverse presentations made by members of the Caribbean medical fraternity”.

Complimentary to the conference, six instructor trainers of Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) instructors were trained by the American Heart Association; four from The Heart Foundation of Jamaica and two from Heart and Stroke Foundation of Barbados. This newly trained faculty will serve to facilitate the increase in the number of ACLS instructors available in the Caribbean region. Already eight ACLS instructors had been trained in Jamaica and the training faculty from Barbados are expected to train additional ACLS instructors in that country.
